The Shabab, the extremist group affiliated with Al Qaeda, claimed responsibility. It has carried many similar, deadly attacks in Somalia and neighboring Kenya.

The five men, who also included a government employee, were abducted in June. A group aligned with the Islamic State is believed to be behind the killings.
