After rioters in Johannesburg targeted immigrants from other African countries, South Africa has been hit with boycotts and cancellations of soccer games and concerts.

The violence appeared to target shops owned by foreigners, the city’s mayor said. It follows a spate of similar riots this year in South Africa that have been part of a larger trend of hostility toward outsiders.
